Traveling for Custom Scleral Lens Fittings: What Overseas & Cross-Border Patients Need to Know

Finding the right solution for complex corneal conditions, severe dry eye, or keratoconus can feel like an uphill battle. For many patients across Africa and Europe, specialised scleral lenses are either entirely unavailable locally or provided only in standard, mass-produced fitting sets that cause discomfort and poor tolerance.

At Paul Moldovanos Optometrist, we custom-design every scleral lens specifically for the unique geometry of your eye. Because our lenses are crafted individually rather than pulled from a generic fitting set, our patients experience significantly higher comfort, exceptional visual clarity, and optimal oxygen delivery to the cornea.

If you are planning to travel to our practice from abroad, understanding the fitting process and timeline will help you plan your travel arrangements smoothly.

Understanding the Scleral Fitting Timeline (6 to 9 Weeks)

Custom scleral lens fitting is a precise, multi-step clinical process. Achieving a healthy, perfect fit requires multiple appointments and lens iterations.

Whether you plan an extended stay or choose to fly back and forth for key milestones, here is how the 6 to 9-week fitting framework works:

1. Initial Consultation & Fitting (Day 1)

  • First Appointment (30 Minutes): We take basic corneal measurements, record your baseline vision, and walk you through the custom fitting process.
  • Second Appointment (2 Hours): This fitting session can be conducted immediately following your first appointment on the same day. We trial initial lenses to determine your corneal profile and exact prescription parameters.

2. First Custom Lens Fabrication & Trial (Weeks 1–3)

  • Manufacturing (2 Weeks): Your initial custom lenses are ordered and manufactured by the laboratory.
  • Settling Period (1 Week): Once your lenses arrive, you will wear them for a full week so your eyes adapt and the lenses settle.
  • First Follow-Up Assessment: At the end of week 3, you return to the clinic for a thorough evaluation.

3. Refining the Fit (Weeks 4–9)

  • The diagnostic data collected during your first follow-up exam is used to design your second exchange lens to fine-tune fit, comfort, and optical clarity.
  • Just like the first pair, the replacement lens takes 2 weeks to manufacture and requires 1 week of wear before your second assessment.
  • Because every eye is distinct, this refinement cycle may be repeated 2 to 3 times to achieve the ultimate custom fit.

Why Our Custom-Designed Lenses Outperform Standard Fitting Sets

Many international patients ask why our scleral lenses are more comfortable and tolerable than those they have tried elsewhere.

The majority of global scleral lens manufacturers rely on standard fitting sets with limited parameters. If your cornea falls outside those standard ranges, the lens can pinch, cause redness, or starve the eye of oxygen.

We do not use generic fitting sets. Every lens we dispense is custom-designed for your individual eye structure. This personalised approach guarantees:

  • Maximum Oxygen Delivery: Essential for long-term corneal health and clear, white eyes.
  • Superior All-Day Comfort: Tailored vaulting prevents tissue irritation, making the lenses easily tolerable even for sensitive eyes.
  • Optimised Visual Acuity: Precise alignment delivers the sharpest possible vision correction.

Practical Advice for Airline Travel with Scleral Lenses

Traveling by air with scleral lenses requires a bit of preparation due to cabin pressure, low humidity, and airline fluid restrictions.

  • Navigating Liquids at Security: Carrying sterile saline, insertion solutions, and disinfecting solutions in your carry-on is essential. We provide our international patients with specific guidance and documentation on managing airline liquid limits so you can keep your lens care kit accessible during flights.
  • In-Flight Ocular Comfort: The low humidity inside aircraft cabins can dry out your eyes. We advise on the best hydration strategies and whether you should wear your lenses during long-haul flights or switch to glasses temporarily.
